Sig Saur 45 - No new handgun will serve those willing to master their personal handgun better. To achieve a higher level of protection requires more practice and more investment in learning to control the recoil. However, the SIG P220 Carry .45 ACP can convince the shooter that there are higher standards of accuracy and reliability than they think. The SIG P220 Carry is an obvious commitment to pistol manufacturing, as there are many different versions of this pistol.

The P220 Carry is a scaled down version of the full-size P220. With a barrel of 3.9 inches and weighing 30 ounces, the P220 carry is the ideal size for self-defense. My personal gun is finished with a Nitron slide. The aluminum frame is anodized. There are shiny stainless steel slide options as well as custom quality grips. My personal Elite version features a slanted grip tang, aluminum grips, and night sights. The heart of the weapon (the action) is the same in each version.

The P220 is a double action, first fired pistol. The gun is loaded and the hammer is lowered using a frame-mounted decocking lever. Your hand never needs to touch the hammer. To fire the gun, a long trigger is pulled and the firing pin is released. The slide pulls back and catches the hammer so that subsequent shots are fired in single-action mode. At close range, it is possible to hit good shots up to seven yards with the double action mode. The single-action trigger breaks at a smooth weight of 4.25 pounds, allowing for excellent practical accuracy beyond 25 yards. When I first got the P220 carry I was impressed with the smoothness, attention to detail and lack of tool marks. The gun is very smooth in all operations including loading, unloading, disassembly and cleaning.

The gun features a large ejection port to positively clear spent cases and allow for administrative loading and handling. The extractor was redesigned a few years ago and is even more reliable than the first editions. At lockout, there is absolutely no lateral play on the slide. The fit is tight. An adjustment of this nature ensures that there is no skew in the lock, which means no eccentric wear and potential for improved accuracy. The gun has a positive firing pin lock or drop safety.

SIG has done an excellent job redesigning the P220 grip frame along with many other pistols in the line. The grip fits my average-sized hands well, as do everyone who holds and fires the gun during testing. The S-curve in the grip keeps the recoil straight back, allowing for a comfortable shooting cycle. Viewpoints are well defined and offer quick view acquisition. When you need to shoot deliberately, the targets are also well designed for accuracy.

The felling of the GIS field is simple. Unload the gun, close the slide back, and turn the takedown lever. Release the slider block and control the slippage as it slides forward out of the frame. This is a simple gun to maintain, clean and lubricate. The receiver has a Picatinny rail.

The weapon system is good, but too many sidearms put technique over tactics. How does the SIG P220 Carry perform in the field, in hard and fast exercises? I loaded several magazines with the 230-grain HPR .45 ACP to test the gun. (My tests included practice loads, service loads, and +P loads for the test function.) I pulled out a Don Hume belt slide and faced human-sized targets at 5, 7, and 10 yards. . I used a variety of Birchwood Casey lenses during this initial program.

The gun fired out of the box; there was no filming period. The balance and short slide allow the gun to clear the skin quickly. I am very pleased with the results. Even at 10 yards, the first double shot resulted in a hit in the K zone when I pulled the trigger correctly and paid due respect to the sight alignment and sight picture. I also shot the gun in the holding position and one-handed exercises. While the recovery is there, it is never unpleasant or wrist breaking. I have found the .45 ACP to be a fine cartridge to shoot in a 30 ounce pistol.

For absolute accuracy, I shot several self-defense loads with premium JHP bullets from the rest bank. There was no power failure, camera fire, or ejection. First up was the new American Gunner 185-grain XTP from Hornady Manufacturing. The function was good and the powder burned clean, a good combination. This was the most accurate single charge tested. Five shots set in a two inch group at 20 yards.

Next, the 230-grain FMJ HPR load was fired for accuracy. Two groups of five shots averaged three inches, not bad for a training load with an FMJ bullet. Finally, I shot the Hornady 230-grain XTP + P. I must admit that I took a major beating with this load. If you feel you need a +P in the .45 ACP, this one delivers. I prefer the American Gunner load or the 185-grain Critical Defense Hornady. The 230-grain XTP+P puts five rounds in 2.25 inches. I won every group with this load shooting from the bench.

The SIG Sauer P220 is a semi-automatic pistol. Designed in 1975 by the SIG Arms AG division of the Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (now SIG Holding AG), and produced by J. P. Sauer & Sohn, in Eckernförde; it is currently manufactured by the two SIG Sauer companies: SIG Sauer GMBH, of Eckernförde, Germany; and SIG Sauer, Inc., of New Hampshire, USA.

Not to be confused with the SIG P210 series, which licensed the SACM Petter-Browning system in France in 1938, the SIG Sauer P220 was developed for release in 1975 for the Swiss Army as a replacement for the SIG P210.

Which had been developed during the Second World War; in service it is known as "Pistole 75" (P75). For the production and commercial distribution of the P220, SIG partnered with J.P. Sauer & Sohn of Germany, so the P220 and all subsequent pistols from SIG and JP. Sauer & Sohn are correctly known as SIG Sauer pistols.

In 1975, Switzerland became the first nation to officially adopt the P220 as the "Pistole 75" (P75) chambered for 9mm Parabellum. Other nations that have adopted it for military use include Japan (general issue) and Dmark (which has the P210 first overall) for special forces only. Followed by the SIG Sauer P226, which incorporates a double stack magazine.

At the end of their military service, all Swiss soldiers can acquire ownership of their artillery rifle for a nominal fee; in particular, commissioned officers and privates in the medical forces of the Swiss armed forces can acquire ownership of their P220 service pistols by paying an administrative fee of thirty Swiss francs.

In the United States, this pistol was sold in a modified form as the Browning BDA from 1977 to 1980.

The P220 was developed in 1975 by SIG and produced and distributed by J.P. Sauer & Sohn. A new locking system known as the SIG Sauer system was introduced, as well as a number of other innovations. This designation is found on the Browning BDA version of the P220 sold since 1975.
