Sig Sauer Switchblade - SIG SAUER produces some of the most recognizable designs in the world of firearms. In recent years, their P320 and P365 pistols have taken the market by storm. Some of their older models, like the P226 and P229, have been widely celebrated for many years. Many of their carbine caliber rifles, such as the MCX series, are also popular with many shooters. However, they also make lesser known and less targeted weapons. SIG's M400 series of AR-type rifles and rifle-caliber cartridges look a little less familiar. When I ask my fellow gunsmiths what the first thing they think of when I say "SIG SAUER" is the M400 on the list or not. I wonder why, earlier this year, I discovered one of the newer M400 series offerings, the Predator. I ended up loving it, and then tested another new M400 AR: the Switchblade.

SIG's Switchblade is a 5.56/.223 AR barrel pistol with an 11.5 inch barrel. It features fully dual controls, from the selector and charging handle that have become common on many ARs, to SIG's ambi mag release button, which they've used before but is admittedly less common. Most notable about the Switchblade, however, is the inclusion of an ambi bolt lock/unlock system. SIG updated the left side button with more lower cross-sectional area and paired it with a removable switch on the right side of the receiver. This lever, mounted above the magazine release button and projecting rearward, moves up and down to engage and release the bolt respectively.

This ambi bolt lock combines with the left side components; manipulate one side and move the other. It's the same with other Switchblade commands - every aspect is interconnected. For the pistol grip, SIG chose to use Magpul's BSL in a slotted style. These two specific components fit together in the pistol and give it its name: the "Switch" and the "Blade" Magpul catch/release. The pistol is finished with solid attention to detail - an integrated trigger guard and flared magwell, three-prong trigger guard and a two-stage Matchlite Duo trigger. The Switchblade ditched the traditional all-black finish, sporting gray "Titanium" Cerakote on the receiver and an M-LOK handguard.

Out of the box the fit and finish looked great. Even on their more user-friendly offerings, like this one, I expect SIG SAUER quality and the Switchblade did not disappoint. I found no issues or problems with the construction or assembly; looked at the gun and thought it should be ready to go. I went through the manual for the gun, tried each of the controls and found that I really liked them. I was concerned that the herbal ambi systems would cause problems or be sensitive, but that was not the case. I could adapt quickly to any operation. The design, placement and geometry of every component is well thought out and works flawlessly. Even with the added lower left rear half bolt housing located near the magazine release button, they didn't get in the way at all; I've never accidentally hit the wrong one when I wasn't looking and working fast. I found that very little adjustment time was required to incorporate the additional control capabilities into my firearm's grip; they smell nature and only smell. The demo gun was sent to me with a Romeo 4T red dot, and I added my own sling and M-LOK QD accessories. After my excellent experience with the initial hands-on time and empty-fire tasks, I was looking forward to the next day.

Zeroing the Romeo 4T was quick and hassle free. My first installations were large live-fire tours; The gun fired smoothly and felt completely comfortable. After zeroing, I chose to fire a magazine at a menu of steel silhouettes between 25 and 100 yards to get a first feel for how it performs. Even running at full speed, 29/30 beats really feel effortless. I'm sure the 30/30 would have been easier had I put more effort into the controller itself, instead of just doing a few slightly less efficient tricks. What impressed me about this shooting range wasn't just the accuracy - I would expect to be able to hit targets in this range with a 5.56/.223 from a SIG or just about anything what another mid-priced AR. . how cool and free it is.

I found the Switchblade to be very well balanced and functional. Some other short-barreled ARs I've tested in the past tend to twist a bit and do so without the slight effects of the added weight, barrel length, and mass of longer ARs. It's subtle but can make a real difference, and in my experience SIG's new handgun caliber pistol doesn't have those effects. In my testing, I never felt like it took much more effort to control than a rifle length system fired from a rest or bipod. In a light, maneuverable and compact stand, it was a welcome discovery. Although a few hundred shots is not enough for a durability test, the gun worked perfectly for me. I only had one misfire, and it was due to bad peace, not the fault of the weapon. The shooting experience was awesome and exceeded my expectations for the price.

SIG's ROMEO4T red dot turned out to be a perfect complement to the gun, and I think one of the new SLX suppressors would complement the package well.

While I wanted to spend a little more time on accuracy, ammo prices still limited me a bit on that front, so I evaluated based on a few bands on paper. I wanted to focus more on combat effectiveness, so Steel Plates consumed most of my limited turn count. From the article, I found the Switchblade to achieve MOA accuracy, which I agreed with. While there are certainly sub-MOA ARs on the market, they tend to be quite a bit more expensive than the Switchblade's reasonable MSRP of 1,549.99 (remember your actual purchase price will usually be lower) . Also worth noting that the ammo I got was cheap ramen, far from assorted. This leads me to believe that if you give it quality food (hopefully, since ammo prices and availability have gotten a little less crazy lately), the Switchblade could probably hit that level of performance well under -MOA. .

For my money, SIG SAUER got it right. Although I already have other ARs that fit this niche, I even decided to buy myself a Switchblade.

For the price, and when you include other goodies like great all-ambient controls, I think this gun is great value. Two days in a row and several shots on target later, and I was sold. SIG's Switchblade has earned my love and respect, and I now plan to purchase one for myself in the future. While there are certainly other brands and models of AR guns worth considering, if you shop in this category, I would definitely encourage you to include the Switchblade in your review collection. Of course, nothing will be perfect for everyone and personal preferences vary widely, I think this is a strong recommendation that will appeal to many shooters. He did it for me!
